ELDERLY AND SPECIAL NEEDS

Each person needs a Go Bag/Emergency Kit.
Be sure to have a support network to help in time of crisis. They can check on you and help you evacuate or shelter in place.
Make sure the people in your support network know where your Go Bag and other emergency supplies are kept. Give at least one member of your support network a key to your home.
Show everyone in your support network how to operate your wheelchair or other medical equipment or devices you require.
If you require medical or life-sustaining treatments, know the location and availability of at least one other facility outside of your area that can provide these. (Include this information on your emergency contact card/sheet in your Go Bag).
Make a list with the name, style and serial number of medical and life-sustaining devices you use. Include a copy of the operating instructions, too.
Wear medical alert bracelets or tags to identify your disability.
Have a list of ALL your medications (prescription and over the counter), with their dosages. Also include any allergies you have (especially allergies to medications).
Extra pair of eyeglasses, hearing aids and extra batteries, oxygen, extra batteries for all of your medical devices.
Copies of your medical insurance cards (Medicare, Medicaid, etc.) and any other important documents, in a waterproof container.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT YOUR PETS

HAVE A GO BAG/EMERGENCY KIT FOR EACH PET

If you are evacuated to a public shelter, understand they might not allow animals inside. It would be best to have another evacuation plan, if possible, so your pets can stay with you. Ask family members or friends outside your area if they would mind sheltering you and your pets in an emergency.
